First Descents 2026: Free Outdoor Retreats for Young Adults with Cancer or MS

Nationwide

About this event

First Descents provides multi-day outdoor adventure programs for young adults impacted by cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS), and other serious health conditions. Founded in 2001, the organization runs week-long Core Programs in surfing, kayaking, and rock climbing, plus shorter community adventures and programs for caregivers and oncology and MS healthcare workers. Programs are fully adaptive and challenge by choice. No prior outdoor experience is needed.

What to expect

Week-long programs are held in locations including the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Hood River and Rogue River in Oregon, the Blackfoot River in Montana, the Adirondack Mountains in New York, and the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Each program is staffed by expert guides, professional chefs, and a small team to keep the week supportive and stress free. Participants share lodging with other people who understand what it means to receive a serious diagnosis young.

Who this is for

Young adults diagnosed with cancer or MS between the ages of 15 and 39 who are currently between 18 and 45. Separate program tracks are available for caregivers and for oncology and MS healthcare workers.
