Stephanie Smith, LCSW, ASW-G, C-ASWCM
Licensed Clinical Social Worker · Founder, My Therapy Groups

I’m Stephanie Smith, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Denver, Colorado. I hold three credentials from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW): the Licensed Clinical Social Worker designation, the Advanced Social Worker in Gerontology (ASW-G) certification, and the Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager (C-ASWCM) credential. I founded My Therapy Groups to fix a problem I kept running into in clinical practice: that finding a therapy or support group for a client should not require detective work.

Why I Built My Therapy Groups

For years I watched the same scene play out. A client would ask me to recommend a support group — for grief, for new parenthood, for caregiving an aging parent, for substance recovery. I would spend an hour calling colleagues, searching Facebook, scrolling hospital pages, and emailing community centers, often coming up short or out of date. Meanwhile, the client kept waiting. Group support is one of the most well-evidenced, accessible, and affordable forms of mental health care available, and yet it remained the hardest type of care to find.

My Therapy Groups exists to change that. The directory now includes more than 1,400 verified therapy groups, peer support groups, and psychoeducation groups across all 50 states. Every listing is checked before it goes live. Every state page includes the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and SAMHSA’s National Helpline alongside group options. It is free to use, free for community groups to list themselves, and built from the perspective of a clinician who has spent years sitting across from people in pain and watching them wait too long for connection.

Professional Background & Credentials

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

The LCSW is the highest level of state licensure for clinical social work practice. It authorizes independent diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, including individual, family, and group therapy. Licensure requires a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program, a minimum of 3,000 supervised clinical hours, and successful completion of the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical examination.

Advanced Social Worker in Gerontology (ASW-G)

The ASW-G is a national advanced specialty certification awarded by the National Association of Social Workers, recognizing demonstrated expertise in social work with older adults, their families, and caregivers. This credential informs the directory’s approach to caregiver support groups, dementia and Alzheimer’s resources, and aging-related grief — topics where outdated information causes real harm.

Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager (C-ASWCM)

The C-ASWCM is a NASW advanced certification in social work case management — the discipline of coordinating care across providers, navigating insurance and benefits, and connecting people to community resources. The certification reflects exactly the work this directory tries to make easier for the public.

Professional Membership

Member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world. NASW membership requires adherence to the NASW Code of Ethics, which guides all content and editorial decisions on this site.

How I Vet the Listings

Every group in this directory passes through a basic verification process before publication: I confirm the group exists, that the facilitator or organization has a current online presence, and that the meeting information is consistent across sources. Clinically led groups have their facilitator’s credentials confirmed where possible. Peer-led groups must be sponsored by an established recovery organization (AA, NA, SMART Recovery, DBSA, NEDA, etc.) or by a community mental health entity.

I do not list groups that ask for money before a first conversation, that screen members based on protected characteristics, or that present unlicensed individuals as clinicians. The directory is not a substitute for clinical assessment — if you are in crisis, please call or text 988.

Editorial Standards

All educational content on this site (topic pages, blog posts, state pages) is reviewed by Stephanie Smith, LCSW, ASW-G, C-ASWCM, before publication. Content is updated when new evidence becomes available or when the underlying treatment landscape changes (for example, when telehealth parity laws shift in a given state). The “Last updated” date displayed on each page reflects the most recent review, not the original publication date. We follow the NASW Code of Ethics in framing all clinical concepts, and we cite primary sources (peer-reviewed research, federal health agencies) where applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is My Therapy Groups a treatment provider?

No. My Therapy Groups is a directory and educational resource. We connect people to groups operated by third-party clinicians and organizations. We do not provide therapy ourselves, supervise the listed groups, or guarantee outcomes. Always verify a provider’s credentials and the current group format before participating.

Can Stephanie see me as a client?

Stephanie is licensed to practice in Colorado, and her clinical caseload is generally full. For care recommendations, please use the directory to find a group near you, or consult Psychology Today’s therapist finder for individual providers in your state.

How is the directory funded?

The directory is free for individuals and free for community-based groups to list themselves. Paid premium placements are available for private practices and clinician-led groups. We do not accept payment in exchange for editorial coverage on the blog or topic pages — those are independent of any advertising relationship.
