My Therapy Groups (mytherapygroups.com) is a directory that helps people find therapy groups, support groups, and shared communities. Because searching for or asking to be notified about a support group can reveal something about your health, some information we handle may be considered consumer health data under laws like the Washington My Health My Data Act. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, what happens to it, and how to remove it. It is written to be read, not skimmed past.
The short version
You can search and browse this entire directory without an account and without giving us your name or email. The one place we ask for anything is our group alerts and waitlists, and that feature is built to forget you: we collect your email for one stated purpose, send you one note, and delete your address automatically. We never sell consumer health data, and we never share it with advertisers. Selling consumer health data would require your separate, explicit authorization under Washington law, and we do not ask for one because we do not sell it.
What we collect and why
Group alerts and waitlists. If you ask us to notify you when a specific group reopens or when a group matching a topic you describe is added, we collect: your email address, the group or the topic in your own words (for example “grief” or “PTSD”), an optional city or zip if you offer one, the exact consent language you agreed to, your confirmation that you are 18 or older or a parent or guardian signing up for a teen, and timestamps. The topic you type can reveal a health condition. That is precisely why this feature works the way it does: one purpose, one email, then deletion.
We use this information for exactly one thing: sending you the single notification you asked for. Group leaders are told only how many people are waiting, never who.
Searching and browsing. Searches on this site do not require an account and are not connected to your name or email. Like nearly every website, our hosting infrastructure keeps standard technical logs (such as IP addresses) for security and reliability; we do not use them to build profiles of your health interests.
How your data is deleted, automatically
Deletion is not a request queue here; it is how the system works.
- If you sign up but never confirm, your address is deleted within 48 hours.
- When we send the one note you signed up for, your address is deleted at that moment.
- If nothing opens within 90 days, your address is deleted automatically then instead.
- Your confirmation email contains a removal link. One click, plus a button press to prevent accidental removals, and your address is deleted immediately: not archived, not suppressed, deleted.
Who we share consumer health data with
No one, in the everyday sense of the word. We do not sell it, rent it, trade it, or share it with advertisers, data brokers, or group leaders.
Like any website, we rely on service providers to operate: our site and email delivery run on WordPress.com (Automattic Inc.), which processes data on our behalf under contractual restrictions and cannot use it for its own purposes. We share no consumer health data with affiliates, because we have none.
If we were ever legally compelled to disclose information (for example by a valid court order), we would disclose only what the law requires.
Your rights
Wherever you live, we extend the same rights:
- Access. Ask whether we hold any consumer health data about you and receive a copy. Given the deletion schedule above, the honest answer will often be that we no longer hold anything.
- Withdraw consent. Use the removal link in your confirmation email, or contact us, and the alert is cancelled and the data deleted.
- Delete. Ask us to delete your data and we will, within 30 days, including instructing our service providers to do the same.
- No retaliation. Exercising these rights never affects your ability to use the directory. The directory does not require an account to begin with.
To exercise any right, use the removal link in your confirmation email, the contact form at mytherapygroups.com/contact/, or write to us at the address below. We respond within 45 days. If we decline a request, we will tell you why, and you may appeal by replying to our response; appeals are reviewed by the founder personally, and we will answer your appeal within 45 days. Washington residents who are not satisfied with the outcome of an appeal may contact the Washington State Attorney General at atg.wa.gov.
Children
This site is not directed at children, and group alerts require you to confirm you are 18 or older, or a parent or guardian signing up on behalf of a teen. We do not knowingly collect consumer health data from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle consumer health data, we will update this page and its effective date before the change takes effect. We will not apply a new practice to data collected under an old promise.
