Friendship Line - Institute on Aging - Free 24/7 Senior Warmline

Loneliness, grief, and depression don’t keep business hours — and neither does the Friendship Line. Founded more than 50 years ago by Institute on Aging, it is the nation’s only accredited 24-hour toll-free emotional support line for older adults, seniors, caregivers, and adults with disabilities.

What to Expect

The Friendship Line is both a warmline and a crisis line. Trained staff and volunteers answer around the clock — whether you’re experiencing anxiety, loss, suicidal thoughts, or simply need someone to talk to. Beyond inbound calls, the program connects with aging adults and their caregivers through ongoing outreach so callers feel seen, heard, and understood during life’s most difficult moments. There is no appointment, no intake, and no charge: just a friendly, skilled listener whenever you pick up the phone.

Who This Is For

Adults 60 and older, adults living with disabilities, and the caregivers who support them — anywhere in the United States. It’s for the 2 a.m. wave of grief, the quiet Sunday afternoon, and everything between.

Why Connection Works

More than a third of older adults report feeling lonely, and chronic loneliness carries health risks comparable to smoking. A consistent, caring voice interrupts isolation in the moment it’s felt. Because everyone could use a friend — as Institute on Aging puts it — a warmline built specifically for elders meets older adults where stigma and mobility barriers often keep them from other support.

How to Connect

Call the Friendship Line anytime, day or night, at 888-670-1360. The line is free and confidential. Visit ioaging.org/friendship-line to learn more or to ask about regular outreach calls.
