The Shore Center — Free Adult Grief Support Group Raleigh, NC
Enrolling now

The Shore Grief Center’s North Raleigh Adult Grief Group offers free, peer-based grief support for adults 18 and older who are mourning the death of a loved one. Part of the Shore Grief Center’s network across Central North Carolina — with groups in Raleigh, Wake Forest, and Wilson serving communities within roughly 60 miles — this monthly group provides a warm and unhurried space to bring whatever you are carrying.

What to Expect

The group meets on the third Thursday of every month from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Room S1 at North Raleigh United Methodist Church, 8501 Honeycutt Road, Raleigh, NC 27615. Sessions are facilitated by trained Shore Grief Center peer facilitators — people who have lived through significant loss themselves and have completed the center’s facilitator training. Meetings typically open with a brief check-in, move into open peer sharing, and close with a grounding practice. There is no curriculum, no homework, and no expectation that members work through any particular stage of grief. People share for as long or as little as feels right, and silence is honored as part of the work.

Who This Group Is For

Adults 18 and older grieving any significant loss — a spouse, parent, child, sibling, friend, or chosen family member. Whether the loss is recent or years past, you are welcome. The Shore Grief Center also runs separate groups specifically for bereaved parents and suicide loss survivors elsewhere in the area, but this group is intentionally open to all forms of adult grief so people whose losses do not fit a single category have a steady place to come.

Why Peer Support Works

Grief tends to outlast the patience of people in our daily lives. Six months in, a year in, two years in, friends and family often expect us to be over it; the grief itself does not cooperate. A monthly peer group gives mourners a place where the loss does not need to be explained or minimized — a room where everyone already understands. Research and lived experience both point to the same finding: people grieve more fully in community than alone.

How to Join

The group is free, open enrollment, and welcomes drop-ins; pre-registration is not required but is appreciated so the facilitator knows to expect you.
