Free Al-Anon Family Peer Support — Statewide Indiana | AFG

Indiana Al-Anon Family Groups offer free mutual support meetings across the state for anyone whose life has been affected by someone else’s drinking. Whether the problem drinker is a spouse, parent, child, sibling, or friend — and whether or not that person admits a problem or seeks help — Al-Anon gives family members and friends a place to find understanding, share honestly, and make positive changes in their own lives.

What to Expect

Al-Anon meetings are peer-led and follow the program’s Twelve Steps and principles. Members share as equals about what they have in common: living with the effects of another person’s alcoholism. Newcomers often start by simply listening. Indiana hosts meetings in cities and towns across the state, searchable by city or district on the Indiana Al-Anon website, with English-speaking and Spanish-speaking groups as well as Alateen meetings for teens. Days and times vary by group, so check the online meeting finder for the current schedule.

Who This Group Is For

Al-Anon is for relatives and friends of alcoholics — you do not need to be married or related to the drinker to attend. Many members arrive exhausted from years of worrying, covering, or trying to control someone else’s drinking. Teens affected by a family member’s alcohol use are welcome at Alateen groups throughout Indiana.

Why Peer Support Works

Alcoholism affects the whole family, and family members often carry stress, guilt, and isolation of their own. Hearing from others who have faced similar situations — and applied the Al-Anon principles to them — helps members reclaim steadiness and boundaries regardless of whether the alcoholic ever changes. Decades of member experience across thousands of groups show that shared experience is a powerful path to recovery for families, not just for drinkers.

How to Join

Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to newcomers — no registration is required for most groups. Find a current meeting by city or district at indiana-al-anon.org. In Central Indiana, the Indianapolis Information Services volunteer line at +1-317-257-2693 is staffed to help newcomers find local meetings, literature, and support.
