Free Brain Injury Support Groups — Connecticut | BIAC
The Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut (BIAC) has stood beside brain injury survivors and their families across the state since 1982. Through a statewide network of free support groups, BIAC gives people a place to connect with others who understand what life after a brain injury is really like — the visible challenges and the invisible ones alike.
What to Expect
BIAC currently hosts 13 active support groups that meet monthly by Zoom or in a hybrid in-person/Zoom format. Each group is co-facilitated by someone with lived experience — a brain injury survivor or a family member — alongside a professional, and the groups stay fluid, responding to the interests and needs of whoever attends. There is never any obligation to speak. You are welcome to share your own story or simply listen and enjoy the conversation. Because each group has its own character, many people sample a few before settling into the one that feels like the best match.
Who This Group Is For
These groups welcome individuals living with brain injuries, along with caregivers, family members, and the professionals who support them. Most groups are open, so you can join at any time. Whether the injury happened recently or years ago, and whether it is yours or a loved one’s, you belong here.
Why Peer Support Works
Brain injury can be deeply isolating, partly because so much of its impact is invisible to the outside world. Sitting with others who have walked similar ground eases that isolation and builds a real sense of belonging. Peer connection also offers something clinical care alone cannot: practical, real-life wisdom from people who have lived it, and the quiet relief of being genuinely understood.
How to Join
All BIAC support groups are free. For the current schedule and details on each group, visit BIAC’s support groups page, or contact Victor Darr at vdarr@biact.org or (860) 219-0291, ext. 302. BIAC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Connecticut families statewide.
