Promise — Free Peer-Run Recovery Café Drop-In Raleigh, NC

Enrolling now

The Raleigh Recovery Café is a free, peer-run community space operated by Promise Resource Network for adults living with mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or both. Opened in downtown Raleigh in early 2026, the café is part of North Carolina’s expanding peer support network and is staffed entirely by people in recovery themselves — no referral, no diagnosis, no insurance required. Promise Resource Network has been operating peer-run programs in North Carolina since 2005 and now runs 26 programs across the state.

What to Expect

The café is located at 310 North Harrington Street, Raleigh, NC 27601, and is open as a daily drop-in space. The same building serves as a community hub in the morning and shifts into café programming in the afternoon. A typical day might include peer-led recovery circles, meditation, a book club, and informal addiction recovery groups — all free and open. People can come for an hour, a full day, or return daily. There are no sign-in requirements, no clinical assessments, and no expectation that you participate in any specific group. Coffee, tea, and quiet seating are always available.

Who This Group Is For

Adults 18 and older who are navigating mental health symptoms, substance use, dual diagnosis, or who simply want to be in a recovery-oriented community. The café welcomes people at any stage — newly considering change, decades into recovery, family members, allies, people who are not sure what they need yet. Promise Resource Network’s model centers people with lived experience as the source of support, rather than treating them as patients. There is no requirement to identify with any particular pathway to recovery — twelve-step, harm reduction, medication-assisted, abstinence, or anything else.

Why Peer Support Works

Peer-run recovery spaces have grown across the country because they fill a gap traditional clinical settings cannot: a place to belong, to be useful, and to be reminded daily that recovery is possible because it is sitting next to you. For people who have spent time in emergency rooms or treatment programs, a café staffed by peers can feel like the first place that does not treat them as a problem to be solved. Promise Resource Network’s outcomes data points to lower hospitalization rates among participants, but most members would tell you the bigger thing is just having somewhere to go.
