Free Postpartum Support Group — Brunswick, ME | MidCoast Mamas
MidCoast Mamas is a free weekly postpartum support group hosted by the Mid Coast Hospital Family Birth Center in Brunswick, Maine. The group’s own description of its purpose is refreshingly direct: join us to find the village you deserve. It exists for new mothers who are in the thick of the first six months and need somewhere to bring both the hard days and the good ones.
What to Expect
The group meets every Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. and runs until noon. Sessions are usually held in Conference Room 1, right next to the hospital cafeteria; if that room is unavailable, the backup location is the waiting room outside the Maternity unit. The tone is informal and unstructured in the best way — mothers vent, celebrate, cry, encourage each other, drink coffee, and eat snacks. Practical support is built in: you can weigh your baby at the group, and you can ask any question at all, either of another mother or of a nurse. The group is led by the Family Birth Center’s breast/bottle feeding specialists, so feeding questions get answered on the spot rather than waiting for a clinic appointment.
Who This Group Is For
Mothers with children ages 0 to 6 months are welcome. There is no requirement to have delivered at Mid Coast Hospital and no diagnosis or referral needed — this is a community group, not a clinical program. First-time mothers and experienced mothers both attend. If you are feeding by breast, by bottle, or by some combination, you belong here.
Why Peer Support Works
Much of what makes early postpartum so hard is the private conviction that everyone else has figured out something you haven’t. MidCoast Mamas is built around dismantling that. As the group puts it, you will meet other new moms and find out that many of the struggles you may be experiencing are common and you are not alone — and you will pick up practical coping ideas along the way. Hearing another mother describe the exact thing you were embarrassed to mention does more than reassurance from a professional can, and having a feeding specialist in the room means the emotional support and the practical support arrive together.
