About This Group
SMART Recovery in Lawrence provides a science-based, secular alternative to traditional 12-step recovery programs. Meeting weekly at the Lawrence Public Library, this group uses cognitive-behavioral techniques and motivational strategies to help individuals overcome addictive behaviors including substance use, gambling, and other compulsive behaviors.
What to Expect
Meetings are held every Wednesday from 5:00–6:30 PM with both in-person and online options. Sessions focus on SMART Recovery’s 4-Point Program: building and maintaining motivation, coping with urges, managing thoughts and behaviors, and living a balanced life. Meetings incorporate practical tools from REBT and CBT. Cross-talk and active discussion are encouraged. The SMARTline phone support is also available daily from 4:00–6:00 PM for between-meeting support.

SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a global nonprofit offering free, evidence-based mutual support for anyone seeking to change addictive behaviors. Unlike 12-step programs, SMART Recovery uses scientific methods, does not require labels, and emphasizes self-empowerment. The Lawrence group is part of a growing network of SMART Recovery meetings across Kansas.
