About ACA Richmond
Adult Children of Alcoholics / Dysfunctional Families (ACA) in Richmond provides peer-led twelve-step support groups for adults who grew up in alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional family environments. ACA helps members identify and heal from the effects of childhood dysfunction, including patterns of codependency, difficulty with boundaries, people-pleasing, fear of abandonment, and other impacts of growing up in a family affected by addiction, abuse, or neglect.
What Groups Are Offered?
Richmond ACA offers peer-led meetings that follow the ACA twelve-step program, including sharing meetings, step study groups, and literature discussion groups using the ACA “Big Red Book” and other ACA fellowship texts. Meetings provide a structured format for members to share their experiences, identify patterns from childhood, and work toward recovery and healthy relationships.
Who Can Join?
ACA is for any adult who grew up in an alcoholic or dysfunctional family and is affected by those experiences. You do not need to have had a parent who was an alcoholic—the program welcomes anyone raised in a home with dysfunction including abuse, neglect, emotional unavailability, or other adverse experiences. No diagnosis or referral is needed.

What to Expect
ACA meetings are peer-led and follow a structured format that includes readings from ACA literature and time for members to share. Cross-talk (direct advice to others) is generally discouraged, allowing each person to share without interruption. Meetings are warm and supportive, with members at various stages of their recovery journey. Newcomers are welcome at any meeting.
Cost & Confidentiality
ACA meetings are free. A voluntary collection covers room rental and literature expenses. Anonymity and confidentiality are foundational principles of the program.
