About Al-Anon Family Groups
Al-Anon Family Groups provides peer-led support for families and friends of individuals with alcohol use problems. With its World Service Office headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia has a robust network of Al-Anon meetings statewide. The program helps loved ones of alcoholics find understanding, strength, and hope through sharing experiences and applying the principles of the twelve steps adapted for family members. Alateen meetings are also available for younger family members.
What Groups Are Offered?
Virginia hosts hundreds of Al-Anon meetings across the state in formats including speaker meetings, discussion meetings, step study groups, and literature study groups. What to Expect
Al-Anon meetings are supportive gatherings where members share how they have been affected by someone else’s drinking and what tools have helped them cope. Meetings last about one hour and follow a structured format. There is no pressure to speak, and newcomers are warmly welcomed. The focus is on your own recovery and well-being, not on changing the person who drinks.
Cost & Confidentiality
Al-Anon meetings are free. A voluntary collection covers expenses, with no obligation to contribute. Anonymity is a core principle—members use first names only and what is shared in meetings is strictly confidential.
