Free Clutter Recovery 12-Step Support — Online | Clutterers Anonymous

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA) is a 12-step fellowship for people who struggle with chronic clutter — whether it’s physical accumulation, compulsive acquiring, or the kind of emotional and mental clutter that keeps people feeling stuck and overwhelmed. CLA was founded on the principle that compulsive cluttering is a recoverable condition, and that members helping members — sharing their experience, strength, and hope — is the most powerful path toward lasting change. Membership is completely free. There are no dues, no fees, and no application process. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop cluttering.

What to Expect
CLA follows a 12-step and 12-tradition model adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous and tailored specifically to the experience of cluttering and hoarding. In meetings, members share their challenges and progress in a structured, non-judgmental setting. CLA does not focus on organizing tips or cleaning techniques; instead, it addresses the underlying emotional and behavioral patterns that drive compulsive clutter — the difficulty letting go, the shame around the home environment, and the isolation that can come with hoarding behaviors. Meetings are available by phone, by Zoom, and in select locations in person. Special events called Declutterthons are held on holiday weekends and offer extended, community-supported decluttering sessions by phone.

Who This Group Is For
CLA is for anyone who feels their relationship with possessions has become unmanageable — including people who identify with hoarding disorder, chronic disorganization, or compulsive acquiring. CLA members include people at every stage of the clutter spectrum, from mild disorganization to full hoarding conditions. The program is also open to people who struggle with emotional or mental clutter. There is no requirement to have a clinical diagnosis or to have reached a crisis point. CLA is welcoming to all backgrounds, ages, and circumstances, and all meetings are fully confidential.

Why Peer Support Works
Hoarding and compulsive cluttering are often accompanied by significant shame and deep social isolation. Many people living with these conditions have never spoken openly about their struggle with anyone. Peer-led 12-step programs offer something that clinical treatment alone sometimes cannot: the lived understanding of other people who have faced the same patterns and found a path forward. Community accountability, shared narrative, and the structure of the steps support meaningful behavioral change over time. CLA provides this in a format that is fully accessible by phone or video, removing geographic barriers entirely and making support available to people throughout Alaska and across the country.
