Free Project HEAL Body Image Recovery Support — 70+ Groups, Nationwide

Project HEAL is the only national nonprofit removing systemic, financial, and healthcare barriers to eating disorder treatment. The co-founders met as teenagers undergoing treatment for anorexia nervosa, recovered together, and built Project HEAL to ensure others have the same chance.

What to Expect

Project HEAL maintains a curated directory of 70+ free eating disorder and body image support groups offered by partner organizations across the country — including dedicated body image groups, LGBTQ+ groups, BIPOC groups, men’s groups, parent/caregiver groups, and general recovery groups. The directory is regularly updated and lets members filter by population, format (in-person, virtual, phone), and topic.

Programs Beyond Groups

Project HEAL also operates Cash Assistance (helping people afford treatment when insurance falls short), Case Management (guiding individuals through complex healthcare systems), Treatment Placement (connecting members with vetted treatment providers), Meal Support (peer-based meal accompaniment), Community Care (peer-led wellness programming), and InformED Clinical Training (training clinicians in inclusive ED care). All of these programs are free.

Evidence Behind Peer Support

Project HEAL partnered with Columbia University on research demonstrating that peer support reduces body dissatisfaction, depression, and anxiety, and reduces restricting and bingeing behaviors. This evidence base shapes Project HEAL’s investment in peer-led recovery.

Who This Is For

Anyone facing an eating disorder, disordered eating, or body image distress — regardless of income, insurance status, body size, identity, or stage of recovery. Project HEAL is particularly focused on serving people whose insurance has denied or capped treatment.
