About NAMI Virginia

NAMI Virginia is the state organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, coordinating a statewide network of affiliates that provide free peer-led support groups, education programs, and mental health advocacy across the Commonwealth. Based in Richmond, NAMI Virginia supports dozens of local affiliates from Northern Virginia to Hampton Roads, ensuring Virginians have access to mental health peer support and education close to home.

What Groups Are Offered?

NAMI Virginia affiliates offer signature programs including NAMI Connection Recovery Support Groups for adults living with mental health conditions, NAMI Family Support Groups for caregivers and loved ones, NAMI Peer-to-Peer educational courses, NAMI Family-to-Family classes, and NAMI Homefront for military families. All groups are facilitated by trained volunteers with personal lived experience with mental illness—either their own or as a family member.

Who Can Join?

NAMI programs are open to anyone affected by mental health conditions. Connection groups welcome any adult (18+) living with a mental health condition, while Family Support Groups serve parents, siblings, spouses, and other loved ones. No diagnosis, referral, or insurance is required to participate in any NAMI program.

First-time attendees are warmly welcomed and the group format is explained at the start of each session.

Cost & Confidentiality

All NAMI Virginia programs and support groups are completely free. Strict confidentiality is maintained—what is shared in the group stays in the group.
