About Northeast Kingdom Human Services
Northeast Kingdom Human Services (NKHS) is the designated community mental health agency for Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans counties in Vermont’s rural Northeast Kingdom. Based in St. Johnsbury, NKHS provides comprehensive behavioral health services including outpatient mental health counseling, substance use treatment, crisis services, case management, psychiatric care, and community support programs. Their team of licensed clinicians serves individuals and families across one of Vermont’s most geographically isolated regions.
What Groups Are Offered?
NKHS offers group therapy programs including substance use recovery groups, mental health support groups, coping skills workshops, anger management groups, and psychoeducational sessions. Individual therapy, psychiatric evaluation and medication management, and vocational support services complement group programming. The center also operates 24/7 emergency crisis services including a crisis line and mobile response team serving the entire Northeast Kingdom.
Who Can Join?
Services are available to residents of Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans counties. NKHS serves people of all ages from children through older adults. The center accepts Medicaid, Medicare, most private insurance, and offers a sliding fee scale. No one is turned away for inability to pay. Crisis services are available to anyone in the service area without prior enrollment.

What to Expect
