About This Group

We Made This, founded in 2009 inside Denver’s African Community Center, was created to build psychosocial skills in refugee and immigrant women facing extra barriers to integration. In the program’s words, it is a multicultural sewing community built on kinship, social justice, and empowerment.

What to Expect

Weekly classes run in 12 to 14 week sessions at Introductory, Intermediate, and Artisan levels, combining sewing instruction with therapeutic art activities, group discussions, English conversation practice, and community field trips around Denver. Handmade items are sold at local stores and markets with a portion of proceeds going back to the makers, and graduates of the full program receive a free sewing machine to take home. The program centers refugee women and also accepts men.

Cost

The program is designed for refugees within five years of arriving in the United States and is funded for that population through state programs. Past the five-year mark, tuition applies (about 1,000 dollars per class), and private donors can sponsor a student’s full participation. Contact the program to talk through your situation.
