Free Dementia Caregiver Support Groups — Texas | Alzheimer's Texas

Alzheimer’s Texas is an independent nonprofit serving Texas families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias since 1982. Its volunteer-run support groups meet at locations across Central Texas and surrounding counties, with virtual options that extend reach across the state. All groups are free, peer-led, and built around the specific needs of family caregivers walking through a dementia diagnosis with someone they love.

What to Expect

Support groups gather caregivers in a confidential, judgment-free space to share their experiences and learn from one another. Trained volunteer facilitators — many of whom have been caregivers themselves — open each meeting with a brief group agreement, then invite members to share what’s happening for them. The conversation moves where the group needs it: how to handle a recent diagnosis, navigate Medicare or Medicaid, manage difficult behaviors, find quality home care, or plan for the next stage. Sessions usually run 60 to 90 minutes. Members are never required to speak.

Who This Group Is For

Alzheimer’s Texas groups are open to anyone caring for a family member or close friend with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. That includes adult children caring for parents, spouses, grandchildren, partners, and chosen family. Groups serve newly diagnosed families, longtime caregivers, and people in the post-loss period after a loved one has died from dementia. The lineup includes general dementia caregiver groups, spouse-specific groups, and groups focused on early-onset dementia depending on location.

Why Peer Support Works

Dementia caregiving has a particular trajectory — the role evolves over years, the decisions get harder, and the support a family needed early on isn’t the support they need later. A peer support group is the most efficient way to learn what’s coming and feel less alone while it’s happening. Members often describe the group as one of the only places they can talk honestly about the slow grief that runs alongside the practical work of caregiving.
