Free Suicide Loss Survivors Peer Group Austin, TX | SOS

Survivors of Suicide – Austin (SOS Austin) connects adults grieving the death of a loved one to suicide with free, peer-led support groups across the Austin metro. The umbrella site at sos-austin.org coordinates multiple recurring meetings — at the Christi Center Annex, St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, and Hospice Austin — so that survivors can find a meeting time and location that fits their week and stage of grief. All meetings are free, peer-facilitated, and welcoming to anyone touched by suicide loss.

What to Expect

Survivors of Suicide at the Christi Center Annex (2306 Hancock Drive, Austin, TX 78756) meets weekly on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. — one of the few weekly suicide loss peer groups in the country. The St. David’s North Austin Medical Center group (2221 North Mopac Expressway, Austin, TX 78758) meets bimonthly on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Hospice Austin (4107 Spicewood Springs Road) hosts two additional monthly meetings. Each group follows a peer support format with check-in, open conversation, and a brief grounding close. There is no curriculum, no clinician required to attend, and no fee. The Christi Center site keeps the most current schedule.

Who This Group Is For

Adults 18 and older who have lost a family member, partner, friend, coworker, or other loved one to suicide. The loss can be recent or many years past; both newly bereaved members and long-term attendees are welcome. Many survivors attend multiple meetings across the network — for example, the weekly Christi Center group plus the bimonthly St. David’s group — to layer support during particularly hard seasons.

Why Peer Support Works

Suicide loss carries layers other griefs do not — stigma, unanswered questions, complicated feelings about the person who died, and the silence of people who do not know what to say. Being in a peer room of other survivors is often the first place people feel they can speak honestly without softening the story. Austin’s network is unusual in offering weekly access to a peer-led suicide loss group, which several national suicide loss organizations have noted as a model for other cities.
