About This Group
The SMART Recovery Support Group in Boulder offers a free, science-based approach to addiction recovery. SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a secular alternative to 12-step programs, grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing. Whether you are struggling with alcohol, drugs, or other addictive behaviors, SMART Recovery empowers you to take control of your recovery using evidence-based tools and techniques.
What to Expect
Meetings follow SMART Recovery’s 4-Point Program, which focuses on: (1) Building and maintaining motivation, (2) Coping with urges, (3) Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and (4) Living a balanced life. Sessions are facilitated by trained volunteers and typically last 60–90 minutes. Unlike 12-step programs, SMART Recovery does not require belief in a higher power, encourages open discussion, and fully supports psychiatric medication and medication-assisted treatment. Participants can attend as long as they find it helpful and may “graduate” from the program when ready.

Founded over 30 years ago, it provides a science-based, self-empowering approach to recovery from addiction. SMART Recovery uses tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET).
